The goal here at paintmyaxe is to deliver a guitar finish that has both brilliant colors as well as a high tech polished look. In addition, our finishes are executed with the very thinnest possible build that will preserve the natural tone of the guitar. Many paint shops use a heavy coating of paint in their process / methods for the sake of fast production speed, and their finishes end up looking thick and plastic. The tonal character of a guitar that has a finish like this starts to take on the sound quality of the paint rather than the natural tone of the woods. While we use modern coatings as well as traditional ones, all the various layers of the paint, regardless of material, are kept to strict thickness limits. Polyester and polyurethane get a bad rap from factory work that is applied heavy in order to speed up large scale production. Here at paintmyaxe we treat those materials just like old time lacquer and go light and easy while coating the guitars in the spray room. Many of our sanding, leveling and polishing stages then need to be laboriously done by hand to ensure that we dont remove too much material too fast, and that we meet our final thickness requirements. It is possible to have an ultra modern finish on your guitar that is both brilliant and durable, but ultra thin. This requires a very skilled craftsman, a painstaking process and an above average attention to detail. Thats the name of the game here at paintmyaxe.

Unlike most paint shops, we also offer nitrocellulose as a finish material
choice. After an initial pore filling coat is applied (polyester), all color stages and clear coats are applied using "good ol' nitro". This process is similar to many vintage instruments and offers that classic warm look that only nitro will deliver. While we feel that our other finishes that use modern coatings are in a similar range as far as final thickness build and resulting tone, if you want to go with "the total vintage thing" we have it! Please see our pricing sheet for cost info. Expect a turnaround time that is 3 to 4 times our norm- most of this time is needed for slow proper curing.
